Fatal Fire in Mumbai High-Rise

Fire on third floor of 18-story high-rise

NEW DELHI (AP) — Police say a fire in a 18-story building in India’s financial capital Mumbai has left a 70-year-old woman dead and another 19 people hospitalized.

The police control room said nearly 100 people were evacuated from the building as the fire from an electrical duct on the third floor spread upward early Sunday.

The Press Trust of India news agency said 77 people who inhaled smoke were treated at a hospital and allowed to go home.

Two of the 19 hospitalized were in critical condition, the police said.

Four fire engines extinguished the blaze within two hours.

Fires are common in India, where building laws and safety norms are often flouted by builders and residents. In December last year, a late-night fire in a Mumbai restaurant killed 15 people.
