Istanbul — A fire at a 24-storey residential building in Turkey’s largest city Istanbul was brought under control on Saturday, Istanbul Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu said.

The building was evacuated and there were no casualties, İmamoğlu wrote on Twitter. He added that the exact cause of the fire was not immediately clear.

Istanbul’s fire brigade said earlier that firefighters were working to extinguish the fire on the facade of the building in the Kadıköy district on the Asian side of the city.

Power was cut in and around the Fikirtepe neighbourhood as a safety measure, state broadcaster TRT said.

Kadıköy is one of the most densely populated districts of Istanbul.

Last week, three people were killed in an explosion and a subsequent fire at an apartment in Fikirtepe.
