Resident Dies after Fire in New Jersey Senior Apartment Building

80-year-old man suffered severe burns

JERSEY CITY, N.J. (AP) — A fire at a senior apartment building in New Jersey claimed the life of an 80-year-old man, authorities said.

The Hudson County prosecutor’s office said the blaze in Jersey City was reported just after 8:30 p.m. Friday. Arriving firefighters reported heavy smoke and found a small blaze in the living room where a mattress was located close to the floor.

The 80-year-old resident had serious burns and was taken to Jersey City Medical Center, where he succumbed to his injuries, prosecutors said. His name wasn’t immediately released.

The city fire department and a county regional arson task force are investigating the cause and origin of the fire.
