Did 2002 Materials Tests Predict Grenfell Tower Disaster?

Activists are urging British officials to make a full disclosure of the results of all testing on the building materials that contributed to the deadly 2017 fire at Grenfell Tower.

The outcry comes after a document dated 2004 was leaked to the BBC that detailed tests carried out in about 2002, on five unnamed cladding systems, all of which failed to meet required life safety standards.

The tests measured how long cladding systems – an aluminum/plastic mix in the case of Grenfell – could resist fire. They were aimed at setting standards rather than measuring the material to determine safety of the building.

Critics say, however, the tests provided a clear warning of the dangers of the Grenfell Towers structures.
