Dec. 12—One person was killed, another was critically injured and two emergency responders were hurt in a fire in a Downtown Pittsburgh apartment building Sunday night.

According to Pittsburgh Public Safety, police, firefighters and paramedics responded to a five-alarm fire just after 10:30 p.m. at The Roosevelt Building at the corner of Penn Avenue and 6th Street.

The fire was believed to have started in an apartment on the 12th floor and was contained to that floor.

Police said one person was pronounced dead at the scene. Tribune-Review news partner WPXI-TV reported that person was found in a stairwell. The person’s name has not been released.

Another person was taken to a hospital in critical condition, police said.

A firefighter was treated on scene for minor injuries, while a medic was taken to a hospital for treatment of smoke inhalation.

The fire was declared under control around 12:15 a.m., police said.

Police said 106 people were in the building at the time of the fire. They sheltered in place or sought shelter in area buildings for warmth.

The American Red Cross of Greater Pennsylvania said its disaster action team responded.

The cause of the fire was under investigation.
